Reading
Students have reading in their schedule DAILY (5 periods every week). Students will spend time daily reading independently, giving me the opportunity to read with students and work with them one-on-one. Additionally, throughout the year, students will participate in:

Trimester 1In Trimester 1, we will study realistic fiction and poetry.
For our Realistic Fiction Unit, we will read Wonder by R.J. Palacio. While reading, we will learn about and discuss: characters, values and REACHES, sequence of events and plot, making inferences, and summarizing. We will regularly have socratic seminars and students will take a short quiz to work on test taking skills every two weeks. **Students will have reading quizzes like this throughout the entire school year. For our Poetry Unit, will will read Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. Additionally, we will also read famous poems and analyze their meanings. Students will keep a poetry journal during this unit, writing their own poems. Students will learn about the form and sound of poems, as well as author’s craft. |
Trimester 2In Trimester 2, we will study historical nonfiction and fantasy.
For our Historical Non-Fiction Unit, students will read about modern history (1850s-present) including inventions, wars, and famous people. Students will use books from the library as well as internet resources for research. This research will be used in their writing class for a writing project. For our Fantasy Unit, students will read books by Roald Dahl. We will study elements of fantasy books as well as focus on Roald Dahl for an author’s study. We will conclude this unit with a Roald Dahl Character day, and students will come to school dressed as a character from their book. |
Trimester 3In Trimester 3, we will study scientific & technical nonfiction and drama.
For our Scientific & Technical Nonfiction Unit, students will read about animals and light in correlation to our science unit. We will focus on elements of nonfiction texts, such as tables, diagrams, and illustrations and how they help us understand what we are reading. For our Drama Unit, we will have a Reader’s Theatre. Students will work in groups reading a drama and perform it for the class. We will also read and analyze famous dramas. |
